Impact Windows Are Made of Both Tempered and Laminated Glass

Tempered glass is heat-treated, meaning the edges and surfaces become compressed as they cool. The compression allows the tempered glass to become around five to 10 times stronger than conventional glass. This type of glass offers excellent resistance to impact and weather due to its strength. If it does shatter, it will break into small pebbles without sharp edges, reducing the likelihood of injuries.

Moreover, laminated glass is made by bonding at least two panes of glass with a thin layer of film or vinyl in the middle, called Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB). The shatter-proof membrane catches broken glass, meaning when something hits it, the outer pane may shatter, but the inner layer will hold the pieces together. While impact windows may crack, but it will not expose your home to the elements.

The impact glass also goes through a special silicone glazing process to prevent the glass from separating from its frame.
