Choosing the Right Size for Windows

Getting the right windows can already be a challenge for most homeowners, especially knowing that these come in a variety of styles, colors and sizes. As building practices have developed, the demand for using larger windows has significantly increased. However, it is important to note that getting the right proportions of your home windows is highly critical. Whether it’s impact windows, here are the things you have to consider.

Choosing the Right Size for Windows

  • Standard Sizing. Most windows come in standard sizes that streamline the installation procedure. Take note that conventional windows range from 24 to 48 inches in width and 36 to 72 inches in height. However, there may be areas or parts of your home that exceed these measurements, that’s why getting the accurate dimensions is essential.

  • Floor Area. Whether you have impact windows and doors, remember that if you have east-facing and south-facing windows, their size should not exceed 15% of the total floor area of the room. If you have north-facing windows, on the other hand, their size can go up to 15-25% of the room’s total floor area, depending on floor material and sun access. For west-facing windows, their size should be less than 10% of the room floor area.

  • Thermal Mass and Window Size. Remember that it’s important to install windows with thermal mass proportional to the size and area wherever they are placed. An expert’s tip says homes with minimal thermal mass should reduce their glass area, and for homes with high thermal mass, larger windows are more ideal.
