Before you begin, collect the right tools. You will need:
A bucket with water and a non-abrasive cleaning detergent.
A squeegee.
A garden hose with an adjustable nozzle.
A microfiber towel.
A plastic scraper for stubborn residue.
Having these items ready makes the job faster and safer.
Rinse windows first
Start by rinsing the glass with a garden hose. Use low water pressure to avoid damaging the caulking. For example, set the nozzle to a gentle spray. After rinsing, apply the cleaning solution and rinse again until the glass looks clean.
Clean on a cloudy day
Choose a cloudy day when possible. Direct sunlight dries the cleaning solution too fast and causes spots. Use a squeegee and work from the top down. Wipe the squeegee blade after each pass with a microfiber cloth to avoid streaks.
If you find stuck-on grit, gently loosen it with a plastic scraper held at a low angle. Do not use metal scrapers or harsh abrasives because they can scratch the glass.
Set a cleaning schedule
Plan to deep clean your impact windows once a year. Also clean them after severe storms to remove sand, salt, and debris. Regular cleaning helps preserve seals and maintain energy efficiency.
Quick maintenance checks
While you clean, inspect seals, caulking, and hardware. If you spot cracked or missing caulk, arrange a repair promptly. Check locking mechanisms and lubricate moving parts if they stick. Finally, clean window tracks and screens to prevent buildup.
